The Menina, Isabel de Velasco, appears in the painting Las
Meninas on the right-hand side of the Infanta Margarita Theresa. Attached to
her writs are red corsages, worn during the 16th and 17th
century to ward off disease and evil spirits.
The role of the Menina’s
was to serve the Queen and the
princesses at court, to be beautiful, agreeable, and quiet decoration. In my
fictional character Isabel is a Rap Artist, she wears a hoodie and takkies
and her voice can be heard through a
microphone. She is no-one’s maid in waiting, standing politely to the side,
instead she invites the evil spirits to do her bidding.
