In this print the woman in the centre of the image who holds the baby, exposes one breast, an association with the exposed breast of the Lactating Virgin Mary. The death of the mother due to the caesarean would also necessitate the hiring of a breast nurse to feed the child. To the side of the image another woman turns away to gaze at a sextant and the implied world of exploration beyond the restricted space of the birthing and nursing of children.
