Steers, 14 Bathurst St., Makhanda
The print @Steers,
14 Bathurst St., Makhanda, depicts the glass shopfront of a popular
fast-food outlet, in the cellphone image is the Observatory, a building which
houses a panopticon like camera obscura used during the colonial period for
keeping watch on the local population. The woodcut imitates an ‘engraving’, the
style in which images of the frontier were transmitted to the European ‘center’
in newspapers such as The Illustrated London News. It is through the
frames of the cell phone, devices from the present, that a new and contemporary
narrative is taking place.
