Dr. Karen Milbourne

In this chapter from her book Earth Matters: Land as Material and Metaphor in the Arts of Africa” curator for the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Dr. Karen Milbourne examines works by Sue Williamson, Christine Dixie, Clive van den Berg and Andrew Putter. She closely looks at the work by Christine Dixie ‘ Even in the Long Descent’ exhibited as one of the series on her exhibition Hide’  asking “What or who else might we find below the full panorama of the Eastern Cape? Should we dig deeper? For Dixie, the land hides untold stories and she does not correct its oversights, she exhumes them.” (2013: 137)

The exhibition ‘Earth Matters: Land as Material and Metaphor in the Arts of Africa’ was exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in 2013 and Dixie’s series, ‘Even in the Long Descent’ was exhibited in this major show curated by Dr. Karen Milbourne in the section entitled, ‘Imagining the Underground.’
